Cybersecurity expert Matt Tait is the unnamed source for the Wall Street Journalarticle about GOP operative Peter Smith's efforts to recover missing Hillary Clinton emails from Russian hackers
Tait provided WSJ documents implicating senior members of the Trump campaign, some of whom became Trump's top White House aides
Smith wanted Tait to verify the authenticity of Clinton emails to be obtained from a hacker on the "dark web"
Smith didn't care that he could be part of a larger campaign by Russia against the U.S., even in light of the DNC hacks
Smith was well-connected within the Republican Party and the top echelons of the Trump campaign, including Michael Flynn
Smith and colleagues set up a Delaware LLC "to avoid campaign reporting" on their opposition research of Clinton
The research group's document, "A Demonstrative Pedagogical Summary to be Developed and Released Prior to November 8, 2016,” dated September 7, lists the "Trump Campaign" as one of four groups involved and specifically names Steve Bannon, Kellyanne Conway, Sam Clovis, Michael Flynn and Lisa Nelson
Feeling uncomfortable, Tait refused to sign a non-disclosure agreement with Smith, ending further contact in mid-September
Tait says that the significance of all this didn't materialize until WSJ reported "that Russian hackers were looking to get emails to Flynn through a cut-out during the Summer of 2016... Suddenly, my story seemed important—and ominous."
